Obituaries

You will not find any actual obituaries here since there is a better place to find them at this Marion County site: IAGenWeb Obituary Board. There, you can search for a name either about whom the obituary pertains or a name within an obituary. However, the information below does list other sources for obituaries.

Can you help? There are three projects related to obituaries. One deals with adding the text of obituaries that are not yet present to our IAGenWeb Obituary Board. Look at the link above to see what has been done so far. Go here for details on what to do. The second deals with continuing to build an index of known obituaries present in the Pella newspapers. Look at the link below to see what has been done so far. Go here for details on what to do. The third involves obituaries from the Knoxville paper. Unfortunately, these pages have not (yet?) been scanned by advantage-preservation (see the fourth item below). Does anyone have an interest in helping with this? Please go to the footer of this page to contact the county coordinator.

Index to obituaries in Pella newspapers.
This index has close to 3100 entries of obituaries from Pella Chronicle and related Pella papers. You can view the entries alphabetically of the deceased or by date. If the person for whom you were searching is not listed here, look at the pella.advantage-preservation.com item below.
Marion County Funeral Homes
Many funeral homes in recent years have begun hosting obituaries on their own web pages or by another aggregator of obituaries. This link takes you to Community/Funeral Homes within the pages of this site. There, you can find links to funeral homes that serve Marion County.
Marion County Funeral Cards
Before the advent of funeral homes having their own websites, many funeral homes prepared Funeral Cards. These were a brief summary of an upcoming funeral for a recently deceased person, and then often posted in places within local businesses.
Free and local: pella.advantage-preservation.com
The site above hosts digital copies of newspapers that were published in Pella. The site has most of the newspapers from 1890 onward, but is not as robust for papers from 1855 to 1890. You need to enter the appropriate search words and provide date windows to search. Before you go here, first check the Index in the first entry above, since the entries there point to this site.
Not free, but national: (1) Newspapers.com; (2) GenealogyBank.com
Above are two commercial/subscription sites to search for obituaries. There are other sites, but these are the larger two. There are fees to use these sites.
Check local newspapers
This link takes you to Community/News and Newspapers within the pages of this site. There, you can find links to Marion County newspapers and other sources. In particular, the last item (Other options) lists some free newspaper links.
