In Response To: John & Sarah Butler Clark (David Clark)

John Clark was the son of William C. and Eliza Hankins Clark. It is believed he was born in Ohio because his parents were married at Coshocton County, Ohio on 18 Mar 1816. William and Eliza Clark along with several of their children came to Iowa before 1844.

One of William and Eliza's daughters, Harriet Clark, married Sanford Butler in Hardin County, Ohio on 3 Sept 1843. I believe Sanford Butler was a brother or relation of Sarah Butler. Another sister of John Clark, Margaret Clark, married John Simpson and she lived and died in Hardin County, Ohio.

Records for John and Sarah Butler Clark indicates they were married in Allen County, Indiana on 3 Nov 1838. In 1840 there is a John Clark, married with one son under 5, and Sanford Butler, an unmarried man, recorded one after the other on the census records in Grand Township, Marion County, Ohio.

It seems probable that Sanford met Harriet through John and Sarah. Sanford and Harriet moved to Iowa in between their marriage and her death on September 12, 1844. They had one daughter Olive Butler, born July 16, 1844 in Iowa and died, September 30, 1844. Harried Clark Butler is buried at Sugar Creek Cemetery, Wayland, Henry County, Iowa. I found no gravesite recorded for Olive Butler.

From "History of the Willamette Valley" by Herbert Lang, page 798, a short biography of Sanford Butler states he was born Rappahannock County, Virginia 3 May 1814. He was taken to Ohio in 1815, moved to Indiana in 1833, and to Iowa in 1844, came from there to Oregon and settled at Salt Creek, Polk County, Oregon. He married 2nd/ Elizabeth Nelson 19 July 1846. They had several children.

Can you share any information about John and Sarah Butler Clark? Only other data I have about John Clark is: Born 7 July 1818-died 16 Aug 1857.

My connection to this Clark family is through John's sister Mary Clark who married Levi McCune in 1850 in Jefferson Township, Henry County, Iowa. Mary Clark McCune is a direct ancestor of my mother-in-law.
