Died, at her home in this city, April 6, 1885, Mattie Phelps, aged 18 years, daughter of Henry and Jennie Phelps.

The death of Mattie is a great grief to her family and friends. She was a dutiful daughter and a generous sister. She was born November 21, 1866, near Albia, whence the family moved to Knoxville when she was about three years old. They have since resided here. She was a member of the B class in the High school, and was ambitious to succeed in her studies. She was an ardent lover of music, and delighted especially in sacred works. She had belonged to the Baptist church for five years, and was an attentive and devoted member. Mattie will be greatly missed by the community, as a young lady of rare worth and accomplishments. The grief of the parents can be assuaged only by the pleasing recollection of the faith she had in the fairer and happier life to be had over the river.

Please God to touch gently the broken hearts of her afflicted ones. Rev. J. W. Hubbard, pastor of the Presbyterian church, conducted the funeral services, preaching a very impressive and appropriate sermon. These were the words of his text: "Remember now the days of thy youth."
