STEPHENS

Samuel Joseph Stephens was born in Wiota, Lafayette County, Wisconsin, Jan. 19, 1861; moved with his parents to a farm north of Goldfield in 1870; passed away at Donaldson, Minnesota, April 26, 1932.

Being the oldest boy in the family, the farming cares fell upon him at an early age. He loved the woods and outdoor life. He attended the rural school near his home. He farmed near Goldfield until 1913, except for a few years he and his brother operated a grain elevator at Thrall. He moved to Minnesota in 1913, finally locating at Donaldson, Minnesota, within 30 miles of the Canadian border. He spent his summers farming and his winters in the Canadian woods. His health had always been unusually good. He spent several days with his brother here in Goldfield, during his brother's last illness. Then he returned to his home on Sunday expecting to return to Goldfield the last of the week to make his home. But his plans were changed, when he was called Home early Tuesday morning. His passing came about 12 hours after his brothers without him receiving the telegram.
