____________________________________________________________

Daniel M. Stephens was born in Wiota, Fayette county, Wisconsin, November 10, 1866; moved to Goldfield, Iowa, with his parents in 1870; was married to Amanda E. Kelling, March 3, 1903, who preceded him in death August 23, 1925; was a member of the United Presbyterian church, passed away April 25, 1932, at his home here in Goldfield, following years of sickness.

Seven children were born to this union, three of whom died in infancy. The four living are Ruth, Howard and Don of Goldfield, and Mrs Thelma S. Black of Champaign, Illinois. The deceased lived practically all his life at or near Goldfield. His early schooling was received in the rural school near his home. His father's early death in 1871 threw the cares of the farm upon the mother and small children. He attended high school in Goldfield, learned telegraphy at Thrall under Agent Brown, taught telegraphy at the college in Shenandoah, Iowa, was station agent at Thrall for a number of years where he and his brother operated a grain elevator; farmed in partnership with his brother; began farming on the Albee place in 1903; moved to Goldfield in the spring of 1909, where he lived until his death.

In brief, this life of three score and five years tells of a life lived above suspicion and reproach. As a parent he lived for his family and especially for his children these past six years. He was a peace loving citizen and a neighbor and friend to all. He was Christian in all his dealings with his fellowmen. True to his ancestors he "lived and died in the faith." His influence will live on in the memory of the home and the community. A rich heritage has been left his children and if they fail it will be through no fault of the parents.

In Memoriam

And now I wish to acknowledge the personal debt I owe the departed. He lived a life above reproach. Never a cross word uttered in the home.

Through all his years of sickness and suffering he was pleasant and cheerful—always thoughtful of others The home was always open to friends. We shall endeavor to the best of our ability to carry on where his life work ended.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his four children, Ruth, Howard and Don of Goldfield, and Mrs. Thelma Black of Champaign, Illinois; one grandchild, Marjorie Ann Black of Champaign, Illinois; two sisters, Mrs. Mary E. Mack of Omaha, Nebraska and Mrs. Emma Barnes of Canon City, Colorado; many relatives and a host of friends.
