Thomas H. Smith, 85, of Sioux City died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Holy Spirit Chapel, with the Rev. Dennis Meinen officiating. Burial of the cremains will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Mr. Smith was born Feb. 4, 1923, in Sioux City, the son of Harry and Margaret (Gossen) Smith. He graduated from Central High School. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945.

He married Clara Bonrud on Feb. 5, 1949, in Sioux City. He was a superintendent for 40 years with Interstate Air Conditioning.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling on leagues and vacationing and spending time with the family. He was a member of the American Legion. He served as a former president of the Sheet Metal Workers Union and former instructor for sheet metal workers at Western Iowa Tech Community College.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Smith of Sioux City; a daughter, Debbie Dorman of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Mark Satterwhite and Robin Haligan; six great-grandchildren, Corey Thomas Smith, Gabby, Christy and Dustin Lamb, Christopher Smith and Eliza Satterwhite; and Irene Noonan of Omaha.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jack and Earl Smith; and a granddaughter, Stormy Satterwhite.
