Christian A. "Chris" Brekke, 97, of Sioux City died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, in the Hospice Unit of Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Leo Kostizen of St. Paul's Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Chris was born April 29, 1910, in Philip, S.D., the son of John and Francina (Rasmussen) Brekke. He grew up in South Dakota, then moved to Denver, Colo., where he panned for gold. He came to Sioux City in 1929.

He married Johanna Harms in 1936, in Canton, S.D. He worked for Armour and Co. for 31 and a half years.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Johanna of Sioux City; four children, Joyce and her husband, Bernard McBride of Smithland, Iowa, Arlen Brekke of Phoenix, Ariz., and Diane Probst and Philip Brekke, both of Sioux City; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Tora Lindblum and June Newman; and a brother, Harvey Brekke.

Pallbearers will be Mike McBride, Doug McBride, Charlie Probst, Zachary Probst, Richard Jahnke and Tyler McBride.
