Sylvan Severson, 95, of Decorah, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002 at the Green Lea Manor in Mabel, Minn., following a long illness.

Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 1:30 p.m. at Big Canoe Lutheran Church with the Rev. David Andreae officiating. Organist is Alan Sensor, and congregational hymns are "What A Friend We Have in Jesus." "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace."

Casketbearers are Gene Brainard, Dennis Fisher, David Lynch, Gerald Severson, Kenneth Severson, Philip Severson and Mark Styve. Burial will be in the Big Canoe Lutheran Cemetery, and Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is handling arrangements.

Sylvan Ernest Severson, the son of Henry and Clara (Stoskopf) Severson, was born Feb. 6, 1907 in Pleasant Township, Winneshiek County. He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Locust and confirmed at Big Canoe Lutheran Church. Sylvan Severson attended rural school, Pleasant #5 in Winneshiek County.

He farmed with his father, Henry, and did carpentry work for years for many people in the Decorah area. He sawed lumber for people in the Decorah area.

Sylvan Severson was a long-time member of Big Canoe Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two sisters: Violet Styve and Edna (Norman) Fisher, both of Decorah, a sister-in-law, Marjorie Severson of Decorah; a brother-in-law, Roger Danielson of Burr Oak, and several nieces and nephews.

Sylvan Ernest Severson was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leonard and Everett Severson; three sisters, Clarissa Danielson, Lillian Stoskopf and infant Evelyn Severson; two nephews and a niece.
