Lavinia Cheshire
(January 14, 1838 – February 7, 1910)

Advocate-Tribune, Indianola, Iowa, Thursday, Feb 10, 1910, p.3
Mrs. Lavinia Cheshire
Lavinia Coffman, daughter of William and Mary Coffman, was born January 14, 1838, in Muskingum County, Ohio. She came to Warren County, Iowa, in the fall of 1854 with her parents, her sister, Mrs. Lou Oakes, and her brothers, Victor, William and John, all of whom are now deceased. She was united in marriage to Wesley Cheshire September 29, 1868. She was the mother of two daughters, Lou and Pearl, now Mrs. Beaman, of Chariton, and Mrs. Warthen, of Indianola. Mrs. Cheshire united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in early life. She was present at the dedication of the first church building erected in Indianola. In the fifty-five years she has lived here she has witnessed the growth of the town from almost its beginning and the multiplying of the membership of the church many times from the number in the society at the first dedication. She is remembered among other qualities for the excellence of her spirit, manifested in the good cheer with which she met the varied experiences of life and the cordiality that endeared her to her numerous friends. During the past year she was subjected to an invalidism that much of the time made her helpless. Her thoughts turned frequently to her heavenly home, and, while at times she wondered what it must be to enter upon the associations and experiences of that future state, she spoke of her going with a naturalness and ease suggestive of an earthly journey. She bore her weakness and suffering with courage, comforted by the good hope of the Christian. On Monday evening, Feb 7, 1910, at 6:35 o’clock she passed peacefully away. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon at half past two, conducted by Rev. E. M. Holmes.
