N.K. (Knight) Hartley

Noval Knight Hartley, 84, of Hillsboro, died at 12:35 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, 1988, at the Maple Leaf Health Care Center, Mt. Plesant.

Born March 3, 1903 on Pine Ridge Farm, south of Salem, he was the son of Lindley and Mary Bell Knight Hartley. He married Marguerite Sanburg on Dec. 29, 1935 near Salem.

He was a retired farmer and a graduate of Iowa State University. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, a member and past president of the REC Board for 28 years and a member of the Southeast Iowa Hereford Association, the Henry County Saddle Club, the Lee County Fair Board and the Federal Land Bank Board. He was past president of the Harmony School Board and had served as the Cedar Township Trustee of Lee County. He was a conductor on the Old Thresher's Midwest Railroad for 20 years.

Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Norma) Stecker, Central City; on sister, Vera Hartley, Salem; and three grandchildren.

The service for Mr. Hartley was held Saturday at the Salem Congregational Church with the Revs. James Rozendaal and Shirley Rozendaal officiating. Burial was in Salem-South Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.
