Robert N. Freshwater

Robert Newton Freshwater, 69, Fairfield, died Friday, Dec. 10, at 9:45 p.m. at Jefferson County Hospital.

He was born Nov. 5, 1902, in Jefferson County, to George W. and Berla Slinkenbeard Freshwater. He married Hazel Creek Nov. 28, 1923, in Iowa City. She died Dec. 1, 1965. He later married Ruth Lyons April 23, 1967 in Memphis, Mo. He was a member of Gospel Lighthouse Church and Eagles Lodge. He had formerly owned restaurants in Birmingham and Fairfield and had also farmed for 10 years northwest of Birmingham.

Surviving are his wife Ruth; one son, Robert Glenn Freshwater of Gonzales, La.; two daughters, Mrs. JoAnn Workman of Fairfield and Byrla Jean Canaday of Virginia Beach, Va.; six grandchildren; four step-children, Mrs. Charles Whitham, Donna Lyons, Larry Lyons and Mrs. Sharon Bishop, all of Fairfield; eight step-grandchildren and six step great-grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret Baker of Cedar Rapids, Osa Holcomb of Bradenton, Fla. and Winifred Emonin of Fairfield and one brother, Harry Freshwater of Davenport.

The funeral was Monday, 2 p.m. at Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Winrich officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.
