Alton Democrat of Feb 9, 1918
Mrs. F. W. Houck passed into eternity on Wednesday morning of last week at her home on North Fourth Avenue. Death resulted from the effects of a stroke of paralytic nature. Miss Eva Mae Woodruff was born sixty one years ago at Waverly, where her girlhood days were spent and an education acquired. She was married thirty seven years ago to Frank W. Houck then a salesman at the Bourtelle hardware store. The happy couple then established a home in Sheldon which they made their permanent residence. Here their three children , Ray of Salina Kans: Mrs. Edith Houck Meier of Calumet, and Mrs. Grace Houck Green of Des Moines. were born. Rev. Allen of the local Congregation church conducted services at the residence on Friday morning at the hour of ten thirty. Despite the inclement weather a concourse of friends and neighbors gathered to pay the final tribute of love, honor and respect in the memory of one whom they had learned to love during her earthly life. A quartette rendered several favorite hymns, among them, Nearer My God to Thee. After which all the was mortal was consigned to the long slumber in East Lawn cemetery. Sincere sympathy is extended to friends and relatives in this their hour of affliction.
