Readers of the Alton Democrat will learn with genuine regret of the death of A. J. Schaap, Sr., on Friday morning at the Cram hospital. The immediate cause of his passing was an injury to the patella sustained by his have fallen down two steps of this office above the Nyal drug store, Although the had been for several years a sufferer from the enervating effects of diabetes. This disease had obtained such a hold upon his system that gangrene developed from the injury and with fatal results. Ira Jacob Schaap was born on August 23, 1860, in the Netherlands, where the first twenty five years of his life were spent, and an education acquired. In 1885 he emulated the example of hundreds of his countrymen and women and crossed the broad Atlantic in search of fortune in the new world. Coming to Sioux County he worked for nine years as a farm laborer and farmer. There he met and married Miss Henriett Rosemaier, who with one son, Ira Jr. survives him. Not long after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Schaap established a home at Boyden, where they resided for ten years. During a part of that time the deceased man served a post master of that little ton. Sixteen years ago the family came to Sheldon, where Mr. Schaap was engaged in the real estate business. He also served as mayor of Sheldon during the years 1911 and 1912. Rev. Henry Vander Naald, of the local First Reformed church conducted funeral services at the residence and that house of worship at 1:30 and 2:00 o’clock, respectively on Tuesday afternoon. A quartette rendered several hymns among then. ‘Somewhere’. The remains were interred in East lawn cemetery. Mr. Schaap was, we think the first president of the Hollandia society. He always took an active and enthusiastic interest in politics and had a local reputation for this answering loyalty to the “ great commoner’. Sympathy is extended to the surviving helpmeet, son friends and other relatives.
