The Hancock Signal of this week contains an account of the death of Rev. W.M. Edgar, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church at Garner. Rev. Edgar will be remembered by the oldest settlers of Hull, as the man who preached the first sermon in this place, when it numbered but three or four families. The service was held in the waiting room of the depot. Mr. Davidson speaks of him as a "peculiarly lovable man, thoroughly charitable for the opinions of others and devoted to others."

He was born in Columbia county, Penn., Feb. 11, 1841, was converted at the age of nine years, married in June, 1861, graduated from the Biblical Institute and joined the northwest Iowa Conference. It was my pleasure to become quite intimately acquainted with the deceased, he being pastor at Calliope when I came to the district. I found him to be a good scholar, an earnest Christian, a devoted pastor and a warm friend. In his death the church sustains a severe loss and society and [...unreadable...] leaves a wife and an adopted daughter to mourn his loss, and a large circle of friends to lament his untimely fall.
