Raymond T. Ahlers, age 89, of Granville, died Sunday, February 4, 1996 at the Orange City Hospital after a brief illness.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, February 7, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Granville. Reverend Clem Currans officiated. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Granville under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home, Remsen. Graveside military services were conducted by Post V.F.W.

Raymond was born December 20, 1906 at rural Granville, the son of William and Rose (Haupert) Ahlers. He was raised and educated in the Granville area where he was later engaged in farming. He married the former Rose Auchstetter January 6, 1931 at Hospers. The couple farmed near Granville. She died January 6, 1940 and shortly after, Ray moved into Granville where he worked in the elevator until entering the Navy on April 11, 1944. He served in the South Pacific during WWII, being discharged June 27, 1945. He then returned to Granville where he was employed at the Dorr Elevator for several years and farmed at Granville and Laurens. He retired about 1956 and then spent the winters in Phoenix, Arizona and summers in Iowa. For the past nine years he had been living with his daughter and son-in-law at Alton.

Mr. Ahlers was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and was a charter member of Post 5347 V.F.W. of Granville.

Survivors include four sons and their wives: Harold and Coleen of Sheldon, Leonard and Nancy of Aurora, Colorado, Dennis and Connie of Laurens, and Norbert and Inez of Julian, California; a daughter and her husband, Joanne and Eugene Geurink of Alton; 24 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; a brother, Lawrence and his wife Olivia Ahlers of Remsen; a sister, Mrs. Cyril (Isabelle) Thier of Adrian, Minnesota; and sisters-in-law, Mrs. John (Frances) Ahlers of Sioux City and Mrs. Ben (Clara) Ahlers of Worthington, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by nine brothers, Henry, John, Joseph, Michael, William Jr.., Anton, Reverend Arnold, Benjamin and Albert; and four sisters, Mrs. John (Anna) Schuver, Adelaide at the age of one, Mrs. Ben (Rose) Vortherms and Mrs. Bill (Ida) Vortherms.
