MARIE ROUDABUSH

Marie Recka Roudabush, age 93, died Sunday, November 2, 2014 at Trinity Hospital in Bettendorf, Iowa. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Thursday, November 6, 2014 Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn, Iowa with Pastor Bonnie Koeppen officiating. Burial will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation: 9:30 - 11:00 A.M. Thursday, at Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn. Memorials may be contributed to the Grace United Methodist Women or the BGM Scholarship Fund. Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn is in charge of arrangements.

Marie Recka Spading was born in Madison Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa on February 20, 1921. She was the 7th of 8 children born to Mary (Jepp) and Albert Spading. She received her early education in rural schools and graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1938. Marie taught in the rural schools for several years. She married Robert (Bob) Roudabush in 1942 in Santa Barbara, California where Bob was working for Lockheed Aircraft. The couple returned to Brooklyn in 1946 where they raised three children: Bob, Marilyn and Richard. Marie and Bob celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1992.

While raising her family, Marie continued to teach in the Brooklyn and BGM Schools. She also pursued her college education and graduated from Drake University in 1962. Her teaching career lasted over five decades including substituting after retiring in 1986.

Marie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved being with her family as well as friends, neighbors and fellow teachers. Marie enjoyed playing cards, sewing, casino visits, water and oil painting and traveling. She often talked about Bob; her two trips to Europe, and her 2007 cruise to the Panama Canal with her daughter.

Marie belonged to the Methodist Church for over 70 years. She served as the Historian and Co-chairman of the United Methodist Women and was active in Martha's Circle. She was also a 50 year member of Eastern Star, becoming a Worthy Matron in 1968. She served on the BGM Scholarship Board and was treasurer of the Brooklyn Activity Center for many years. She was also involved in the Brooklyn Senior Housing and Columbia Club.

Survivors include three children: Bob (Pam) Roudabush of Latrobe, PA; Marilyn (Burt) Gearhart of LeClaire, IA; Richard (Jody) Roudabush of Winton, CA; grandchildren: Randi (Dan) Gibson of Darlington, PA; Rob Roudabush of Greensburg, PA; Chris (Kurt) Cournoyer of LeClaire, IA, Gabriella (Kevin) Roosevelt of Aliso Viejo, CA; Maegan Roudabush of San Diego, CA: Molly Roudabush of San Diego, CA; Justin (Katie) Roudabush of Corvallis, OR; 11 great-grandchildren: Danielle, Rachel and Sammy Gibson, Bennett, Sydney, Tanner and Chase Cournoyer, Charlotte and Alex Roosevelt, and Duncan and Carly Roudabush; a sister, Gladys Paynter of Brooklyn, IA, and 19 nieces and nephews.

Marie was preceded in death by husband Bob (1993), her parents, three sisters: Edith Spading, Myrtle Ormiston, and Kathryn Metz; three brothers: Ross, Harvey and Marvin; a sister-in-law Ruth Roudabush, and daughter-in-law Joan Roudabush.
