David Virgil Smith, 74, of Onawa, Iowa, passed away Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Westwood Specialty Care, Sioux City, Iowa.

A celebration of life service will be 3:00 P.M. Saturday, February 17, 2024, at Goslar Funeral Home Chapel, with Evangelist Dale Wolf, officiating. Military honors will be provided by the United States Air Force. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with David’s obituary. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.

David Virgil was born November 16, 1949 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, the son of Arnold and Elizabeth (Wheelbarger) Smith. He graduated from San Marcos High School and attended college in Susanville, California. David proudly served in the United States Air Force from December 11, 1969, until his honorable discharge on December 10, 1973.

He worked for Crete Trucking in Moorhead, Iowa, for many years.

David enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, hunting, and watching and feeding the birds. His favorite thing to do was to fish, anything and everything about fishing he enjoyed.

David loved going to church. Faith was very important to him. David was known for “Handing out the Million Dollar Bills” to all the children in the area.

Survivors include his brother, Michael (Ann) Smith of Hillsboro, Oregon; David’s best friends, LaVerne (Barbara) Holmberg of Onawa, Iowa, and their daughter, Abby (Axton) Dean of Onawa, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; and many other friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Elizabeth (Wheelbarger) Smith; and three siblings, Arthur Smith, James Smith, and Larry Smith.
