Steven J. Rackis passed away May 23, 2023 in Iowa City, Iowa. He was born in Peoria, Illinois on June 18, 1957 to Joseph and Eugenia (Mihalopoulos) Rackis.

Upon graduation from the University of Iowa Master’s program, Steve began his long career working in Iowa starting with workforce development for 21 years, first in Dubuque and then Cedar Rapids, finishing his career as an administrator for housing assistance in Iowa City where he retired in June 2022. He met his wife Sandra in Dubuque and they were married in 1994.

Steve's interests ranged from the Green Bay Packers, Iowa Hawkeyes, dragon boat racing, golf, yard work, traveling, grilling, and cooking Greek dishes for family and friends. Most of all he loved spending time with his son Colin where they were often seen with their dog Daisy at the dog park. They also spent their time together watching the Star Wars and Marvel Universe films.

He is survived by his wife Sandy, son Colin, sister Becky Rackis, niece Gina Weber, nephew Jordan (Melissa) Weber, and their children. Steve is preceded in death by his parents, in-laws John and Germaine Weber, and brother-in-law John “Bronco” Weber.

A cremation has been arranged. A celebration of life will be held a later date. Service details will be posted when they become available.

The family would like to thank the Iowa City first responders and the Mercy Hospital ER and ICU staff for their services.
