John was born on October 12, 1967 in Iowa City to Keith and Marty Kafer. He attended Iowa City High School where he lettered in football, track, and baseball. After graduation, John attended the University of Iowa and graduated with a degree in history. He was a diehard Iowa Hawkeye and Cub fan!

On April 18, 1998, John married Darcy Smith. They became the proud parents of twins, Isabelle and Logan, who will be juniors at Clear Creek Amana High School this fall. John loved attending all of the kids’ activities! In recent years he attended Isabelle's dance recitals/competitions and Logan's cross country/track meets.

John worked for Pearson Testing Services for many years, first as a scorer and more recently in a supervisory capacity.

John was an avid runner and loved music, especially the Beatles. He loved spending time with his close friends, especially the 86'ers. He also loved dogs, notably Archie (Logan and Isabelle's dog) and all English Bulldogs.

John is survived by his mother, Marty (Concord, CA); his children: Logan and Isabelle (North Liberty, IA); his ex-wife, Darcy Kramer (North Liberty, IA); and siblings: Jim Kafer (Joyce), Anne Lannon (John), Anita Kafer (Steve Mensen), and Liz Kafer (Rick Putnam). He was preceded in death by his father, Keith Kafer.

The family would like to thank The University of Iowa Rehab Hospital and The Bird House for their compassionate care.
