Hunting Accident Is Fatal To Fairfield Boy
CLOYCE HARPER INSTANTLY MET DEATH ON FARM

Woodruff's Gun Discharged When He Slipped And Fell

A sad termination for a rabbit hunting trip awaited Cloyce HARPER, son of Ralph HARPER of Fairfield, about 5:30 last evening when he was instantly killed by the discharge of a shotgun in the hands of his friend and hunting compnaion Torrence Woodruff.

With Companion

The two lads had gone hunting about 1:30 yesterday afternoon and at the close of the day were returning home through the Hagens and Heston farms about three and a half miles south of Fairfield, in the general direction of the Glasgow road. Travelling beside a fence near the Fay Heston home, young Woodruff, who was behind HARPER, slipped, his feet seemingly to have caught in weeds, and in this accident his gun discharged in an unaccountable manner. The charge from the 12 guage shotgun struck HARPER squarely in the back between the shoulder blades. He was killed instantly and his body terribly lacerated.

Brought By Wagon

Woodruff immediately ran for help to the home of Fay Heston. Here word was sent to Fairfield for Coroner C. C. Tallman and Sheriff Lane Stansbery after it was ascertained that HARPER was beyond aid. At the farm home a wagon was secured to remove the body. The roads in this neighborhood were impassible for automobiles at some points. Sheriff Stansbery had difficulty in coming near to the spot where the accident occurred.

Cloyce HARPER would have been 16 years old on February 29. He leaves his father, one brother, Weston and two sisters Kathryn and Eileen. The mother died seven years ago.

Was Accidental

This morning Coroner C. C. Tallman announced that an investigation of the circumstances indicated that the shooting was entirely accidental. Young Woodruff is exonerated and no inquest will be held.

Funeral rites will be held tomorrow afternoon at the Hoskins funeral home at 2:00. Dr. Gilbert Voorhies will have charge of the service. The burial will be made in Evergreen cemetery.
