She appears to have died on September 22, 1912 according to her obituary. She also appears to have used the name "Nellie" rather than "Ellen" in most records.

Mrs. John Murphy died at her home north of Livermore Sunday morning at eight o'clock. The funeral services were held at Sacred Heart church Tuesday morning at ten o'clock, Mrs. Murphy has been ailing for a long time.Humboldt Republican - Humboldt, Iowa

John Murphy who died very suddenly Saturday night about ten 'clock at the age of 72 years. He was one of the old pioneers of Humboldt county. He was born in Minnesota March 14, 1858 and came to this county with his parents in 1866 where they settled on a farm east of Livermore. He had spent most of. his life in Humboldt county. He was married to Miss Nellie Brennan in January, 1877, [sic --should be 1887] in Livermore. There were born to them six children. The first two girls died in infancy, Emmet, Mrs. Anna Sweeney of Livermore, Lillian Sweeney deceased and John V. Jr. of Livermore. His wife died Sept. 28, 1912. About ten years ago he was married to Mrs. Gorman who died five years ago. He is survived by five brothers and two sisters, James and Patrick Murphy of Livermore, Owen Murphy of Sioux Falls, S. D., Hugh Murphy of Elmore, Minn., Matt of Wisconsin, Mrs. Bart Hanifan of Livermore and Mrs. John Hanifan of Minnesota. He retired from his country farm in 1901 purchasing what was the old George LaCompte place in the northeast edge of Livermore, now occupied by his daughter and son-in-law John Sweeney. Later he purchased the old Frank Carlman place across the road where he had lived until the time of his death. Funeral services were held from the Catholic church in Livermore on Tuesday morning, March 25, Father Costello officiating. He was laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery.Humboldt Republican -- Humboldt, Iowa
