Benjamin J. Goldsmith was the fourth child of the late Rev. Joseph and Elizabeth Goldsmith and was born in Baden, Canada on October 26, 1830. He died at his home in Trenton on February 4, 1920 aged 89 years, 3 months, and 8 days.
He left Canada with his parents when he was but one year old and for about 15 years the family lived in Butler County, Ohio. They came to Iowa in 1846 and settled in Lee County. There he was married to Magdalena Hauter on June 1, 1854. There were born to this union three children of which one, a son, preceded the father in death 42 years ago. There remain to mourn their loss two daughters, Elizabeth and Ella, living at home: The mother preceded him in death March 31, 1918. The greater part of his life he lived in Henry County and most of the time near Trenton. He was the son of the first Amish minister stationed in the Sugar Creek church. He also leaves two brothers, Chris of Butler County, Ohio and Jacob of Wayland, and two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Roth and Mrs. S. Gerig of Wayland. The funeral was held from the home on Saturday afternoon, February 6, and interment made in the Greenmound Cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev. S. M. Musselman.
