February 12, 1920 – Wayland News

Thomas Darneal died of apoplexy at his home north of Wayland Monday evening about 5 o’clock. Henry Schantz was coming to town about 2 o’clock in the afternoon when passing saw Mr. Darneal lying in the wood yard. He called to him twice and getting no reply, he went to him and found Mr. Darneal to be unconscious but still living. Dr. Allen happened to be passing a few minutes later and Mr. Schantz called him in. The unconscious man was carried into the house and an examination disclosed indications of apoplexy. Everything possible was done for the stricken man but he did not regain consciousness and died about 5 o’clock. The body was brought to the Boller Undertaking rooms where it was prepared for burial. Tuesday afternoon, the casket was taken to the Hinshaw home where it remained until the hour of the funeral which was held at 2 o’clock Wednesday. Mr. Darneal’s son, Charles, of Mt. Pleasant came Monday evening to assist in the funeral arrangements.

Thomas Darneal has been a resident of Henry County for more than 63 years, all of which time he has resided near Wayland. He was a man who attended strictly in his own business and allowed every other person to do the same. He was absolutely honest in his business dealings and carries to the grave the respect of all who have known him and have associated with him during the past 50 years. The wife preceded him in death about six years ago, since which time he has lived alone. If his spirit were to guide the hand the pen these lines, no eulogy would be written, but in justice to him be it said he was a loyal, honest, industrious, law abiding citizen.
