May 20, 1920 – Wayland News

Mrs. Susan Drewer, widow of the late Joseph Drewer, died at the home of her niece, Mrs. A.D. Cain in Brighton, early Saturday morning. For many years, Mr. and Mrs. Drewer resided on a farm south of Wayland and they will be held in kindly remembrance by many of the older residents here. Mrs. Drewer had been sick for about three weeks. She was taken sick at the home of Mrs. Van Dyke near Rubio where she was caring for Mrs. Van Dyke who is an invalid. She was removed to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cain near Brighton about three weeks ago. She seemed to be improving and was up and about the house a good part of the time. Friday afternoon she helped with the housework and was in good spirits. She was as well as usual at 10 o’clock when Mr. Cain came from town. Saturday morning the little daughter of the family found Mrs. Drewer dead in bed, she having passed away during the night from heart failure caused by neuralgia of the heart and diabetes. Those attending the funeral were A.D. Cain and wife of Brighton, Mrs. Minda Edington of Edgar, Nebraska, Joseph Rich of Brighton, F. H. Alter of Coppock, and Mrs. Cady of Des Moines.

OBITUARY:

Susan Alter was born in Henry County Iowa on January 16, 1840 and died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A.D. Cain of Brighton Saturday morning May 15 about two o’clock. She grew to womanhood near New London, Iowa. Her parents, Frank and Cynthia Alter came to Iowa in 1840 and made their home here until the summons came for them to go to their eternal home. They were the parents of nine children of whom all are gone but two, Francis Alter of Coppock, Iowa and Cynthia Cady of Des Moines, Iowa.

Susan Alter and Joseph Drewer were united in marriage March 31, 1870. To this union two sons were born, John who died in early life and Frank who was married to Miss Minda Nott. There were three children born to them, two having died young, leaving Homer Drewer as the only survivor of Mrs. Drewers family the son, Frank, having died some years ago. One niece, Cynthia Edwards of Pocatella, Idaho, many nephews and nieces in the near community, and many friends mourn her departure. Her request was to be laid to rest beside her father and mother in Finley cemetery to await the general resurrection. Funeral services were held at Finley Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock conducted by Rev. W. H. Slack.
