Chris S. Roth

Once more the community is called on to chronicle the death of one of its worthy young men. Christian S. Roth died at his home on the farm known as the Noble farm east of town last Tuesday evening, August 23, 1910. The end came somewhat unexpectedly following an operation performed earlier in the day by Dr. Brockman of Ottumwa, assisted by Drs. Allen and Smith for strangulated hernia. The operation had promised much but his life slipped away before those with him could scarcely realize it and before he had come out completely from under the influence of the ether administered for the operation, his physician, Dr. Allen, being with him at the time.

He was born near Wayland May 25, 1879 and was thus only 31 years, 2 months, and 29 days old. On February 25, 1904 he had entered into matrimony with Emma Hertig who, with their four year old son, survives him. In his youth he had united with the Mennonite church of which he remained a faithful member until his death. Besides his widow, five brothers and seven sisters mourn their loss, of whom all but two sisters live in this community. One sister, Katie, lives in Kansas, and another, Elizabeth, in Michigan.

The funeral was held at the Wayland Mennonite Church on Thursday August 25, when a crowd of nearly 600 relatives and friends attended. His remains were laid to rest in the recently added burial grounds of the church, better known as North Hill cemetery north of town.

Chris had always been a hard working man and honest, and although suffering more or less the greater part of the summer, less than a week before his death he was still hard at work. His brief final sickness came over him so suddenly that it is hard to realize that he is no more. He met his end philosophically and died strong in his hope for a better life beyond.
