Peter J. Roth taken suddenly Monday Morning

Peter J. Roth son of Nicholas and Magdalene Yoder Roth, was born in Alsace-Lorraine France 3/20/12880 and departed from this life 6/12/1950 at the age 70 years, 2 months, and 22 days . At the age of 11 years he with his parents brothers and sisters came to America and settled on as farm southwest of Wayland, Iowa. In his youth he united with the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church in which faith he died.

He was retired farmer living in East Wayland passed away unexpectedly Monday when the doctor arrived. He had been working in garden that morning, tying tomato plants, and passed on, He had been in failing health for several years.

He was born March 20 1880 in Alsace, France and moved to this country in 1891. He was married Dec. 2, 1903 to Lydia Orendorff. They lived on a farm near Wayland until he retired 7 years ago. Then They lived in Wayland. To this union seven children were born: For many years they lived on a farm 1 mile east of the Sugar Creek Church. Seven years ago they retired and moved to their late home in Wayland, Iowa.

Mr. Roth was a kind husband, a loving father, and conscientious everyday Christian, always placing the interests of his family ahead of his own needs. He will be greatly missed by his family but they are willing to leave in the hands of Him who knows best. He suffered a great deal at times during the last years but he bore it all patiently and was always glad for friends who called when he was not able to be about. Death came from a heart attack while at work in his garden which was his favorite pastime.

His daughter Alma one full sister, his parents, two brothers, and four half-siksters preceded him in death. Those left to cherish many pleasant memories of him are his wife, five sons, and one daughter.

He is survived by his wife, five sons, Orval of the Erueka community, Clarence E. of Mt. Pleasant,; of Milton, Lloyd and Allen all of Wayland, one daughter Mrs. Gladys Henry Widmer also of Wayland, two brothers, Ben R. Roth of Wayland, Nick Roth of Albany Oregon, one sister, Mrs. Anna Gerig also of Albany. Twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive. One daughter, Alma, preceded him in death.

Funeral services are to be held this Thursday afternoon at the Sugar Creek Church. The Stacy Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Conducted from the home by Vernon Gerig and Willard Leichty and at the Sugar Creek Church by Simon Gingerich, assisted by E. S. Mullett pastor of the Wayland Mennonite Church. Text used “we are always confident” Cor II 5;6.

Rev. and Mrs. Vernon Roth and a men’s octet sang. The casket bearers were the following grandsons:
Max, Rex, Ronald, Donnie, Wesley, and Russell Roth and Richard Widmer.
