Mary Roth Boese was born in Pfafstadt, Alsace July 27, 1862 and came to America when five years of age. Her parents settled in Wayne County Ohio where she grew to womanhood. It was here also where she was converted and united with the Amish Mennonite Church. On December 8, 1881, she was united in marriage to Jacob Boese. They set up housekeeping in Ohio but in the Spring of 1886 they moved to Henry County, Iowa and since then they have lived in this community. Their family consisted of seven children, five daughters and two sons. Her husband and three daughters preceded her in death. She was a consistent member of the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church and a regular attendant at the services as long as her health permitted. She was a good mother and an appreciated neighbor. It was only about a year ago that her health broke and made it necessary for someone to care for her. She passed away early Thursday morning, December 16, 1948 at her late home in East Wayland Iowa at the ripe age of 86 years, 4 months, and 19 days. She leaves two daughters, Minnie wife of Chriss Hertig and Verna, wife of Louie Kauffman, both of Wayland, Iowa. Two sons, Samuel of Vassar, Michigan and Albert of Wayland, Iowa. Two brothers, Chris H. Roth and Peter G. Roth, both of this community; one half-sister, Mrs. Vernon Amstutz, Smithville, Ohio, 20 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and fiends to mourn her passing.

The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon at the Sugar Creek Church conducted by the home ministers, Simon Gingerich and Willard Liechty. Interment in the cemetery nearby.

Oh what a blessed glorious sleep
Has settled on her brow;
Then why should her deer children weep,
When she’s so happy now?
Yes, we hope again to meet her,
In the realms beyond the sky,
In celestial song to join her,
Praising Him who reigns on high.
