Thursday, November 16, 2017Gary Allen Schwab, age 80, of Lamoni, Iowa, son of the late Harold F. Schwab and Doris Freda (Chase) Schwab, was born on July 12, 1937 in Exira, Iowa. He passed away at Lamoni Specialty Care in Lamoni, Iowa on Monday, November 13, 2017.
Gary graduated from Exira High School in 1955. He attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa where he graduated in 1959, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Business. He married Shirley M. Esbeck on June 15, 1957, at the Exira Lutheran Church in Exira, Iowa. The couple had two children, Sheri and Jim.
Gary’s love of cattle and auctions began at a young age and he always found time to attend a cattle auction. Gary worked for Quaker Oats Company in Hubbard, Iowa, Allied Mills and Sevde Transfer, both in Ames, Iowa, the Alta, Iowa Livestock Exchange for four years and Eldora, Iowa Livestock for a year before becoming co-owner of the Lamoni Livestock Sales in Lamoni, Iowa in June of 1965. He was active in the livestock industry. After selling the livestock business in 1999, he stayed busy doing order buying and working at his farm with his son, Jim. Gary loved playing golf, cards, and spending time with his family and friends.
Gary was a member of the Lamoni United Methodist Church. Some of his past positions were: President of the Iowa Livestock Market Association, Lamoni City Councilman, member of Lamoni Golf Club, and Decatur County Cattlemen’s Association. He was on the Building Committee for the Lamoni Methodist Church. Gary was a proud supporter of the Iowa State Cyclones.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of Lamoni; daughter, Sheri Betts, and husband, Steve, of Ames; son, Jim Schwab, and wife, Serena, of Lamoni; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; sister, Gloria Hackwell, and husband, Floyd, of Exira; sisters-in-law, Mary Jo Schwab, of Roseville, Minnesota, Lavonne Bride, and husband, Terry, of Sioux City, Iowa, and Marilyn Behrends, and husband, Bruce, of Anita, Iowa; brother-in-law, Gary Esbeck, and wife, Connie, of Naples, Florida; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and his brother, Charles Schwab.
A memorial service will be held at the Lamoni United Methodist Church, Lamoni, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 18, 2017. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa. A visitation will be held at the Lamoni United Methodist Church from 5-7 p.m. Friday. Arrangements are through Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni, Iowa.
A memorial fund has been established by the Family.
