Mamie Marie Roberts, age 94, of LeRoy, Iowa, the daughter of Samuel Hoyt and Mamie Fetty (Elliott) Moxley, was born June 25, 1923, in Hillsboro, Iowa. She died at the Lamoni Specialty Care in Lamoni, Iowa on Friday, September 8, 2017.

Mamie graduated from Weldon High School in 1941. She played forward position on the girl’s basketball team. They were sectional champs the 1940-41 season. She married John Lee Roberts on May 9, 1942. They were blessed with two sons, Gary Lee and Steven Charles. Mamie and John farmed in the Leroy area. Later, they spent many winters in Florida.

Over the years, Mamie was a member of the Federated Women’s Club in Decatur County, Iowa. She was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church in Leroy and taught Sunday school and helped with the youth group. She and John were members of the Riveria Country Club in Ormond Beach, Florida. She was proud that she won second in a golf tournament in the 1990’s and shot a hole in one in 1986.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, John, on January 16, 1994; sons, Steven, on June 14, 1982, and Gary, on October 18, 2000; grandson, Ricky Dean, and siblings, Virgil Moxley, Virginia McKern, and Charles Moxley.

Survivors include her grandchildren, Shanda Hiatt and husband, Michael, of Osceola, Iowa, Kelli Price and friend Bobby Brown of Osceola, Kim Hepner of Osceola, Tina Svanda and husband Lee of Slovenia, Brian Roberts of Rock Springs, Wyoming, Nathan Roberts of Everett, Washington, Nick Roberts of Hayesville, Kansas, Reeb Roberts of Hayesville, Kansas, Andrew Roberts of Quincy, Illinois, and Matthew Roberts of Quincy; many great grandchildren; brother, Larry Simmerman and wife Joanne of Moberly, Missouri; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 11, 2017, with Matthew Novotny officiating. Visitation is Monday 9:30-10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Metier Cemetery near Leroy, Iowa.
