The Clinton Daily Herald, published in Clinton, Iowa on Wednesday, July 7th, 1897

There were two funerals at DeWitt Monday. That of Mrs. James Hicks at 12 o'clock, the lady who was so severely burned from the explosion of a lamp at her home near Elwood on the 17th ult, who died on Sunday morning at four. The services were conducted here at the M. E. church, Revs J. Q. Robinson and W. Lease officiating. Besides the husband she leaves three sons, Charles, Earl and Ralph, and one daughter to mourn a devoted wife and affectionate mother. The sympathy of all who know them go out to the bereaved and stricken family. Mrs. Hicks was born in Ohio and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I . W. Jones, old settlers of this town and vicinity, and was aged 49 years at her death. The funeral was largely attended by old friends and neighbors.
