The Late Ezra Batchelder
Of the late Ezra Batchelder, whose funeral occurred from the Congregation church in this city at 2 o'clock this afternoon, the Chicago News speaks as follows:
The death of Ezra Batchelder, of Chicago, at Grand Haven yesterday, news of which reached here to-day, will pain the old settlers of Chicago of whom he was one.
Mr. Batchelder was born at Paxton, Mass., Nov. 10,. 1820, and came to Chicago when 17 years old to act as clerk for Philo Carpenter, whose place of business is where the lumber market now is. In those primitive times the lad used to skate up and down the river, being able to see a customer approach and skate in to wait upon him. Many interesting stories of those early days Mr. Batchelder has delighted in telling. After serving Mr. Carpenter several years Mr. Batchelder became a member of the firm of Holden & Batchelder, and a few years later removed to Lyons, Iowa, where he went into the real estate business. Shortly after his arrival at Lyons, Mr. Batchelder was married. For the last ten years he has been in Chicago in the real estate business. His health began to fail about two years ago, but his last illness dates from November, 1889. For the last nine weeks kidney troubles and a complication of diseases have hastened his end. He went to Grand Haven, Mich., the last of November to visit his sister, and endeavored to regain his health. The deceased leaves two brothers, Webster Batchelder of Chicago, and Jennison Batchelder, Glen Falls, N. Y.; a sister, Mrs. Sarah Shipper, of Grand Haven, Mich., and a daughter, Mrs. J. F. Barker, of Clinton, Iowa. During his life Mr. Batchelder was always a hard working man, and he had accumulated considerable property, the greater part of which is in Chicago real estate. The funeral services will be held at Grand Haven to-morrow at 10 o'clock. The remains will be conveyed to Lyons, Iowa, where they will be interred.
