One of Michigan’s foremost historians, Dr. Milo M. Quaife, was killed early Tuesday in a three-car crash near Sault St. Marie.
The 79-year-old chronicler of Michigan and Great Lakes history was en route with his wife, Letitia, also 79, to visit with Joe Bayliss, his collaborator in writing the historical novel “River of Destiny.”
Mrs. Quaife suffered a fractured right wrist.
The crash occurred seven miles south of the Soo on US-2 when Dr. Quaife’s northbound car collided head-on with one going south that was passing another southbound car. Four others were injured.
DR. QUAIFE was secretary-editor of the Detroit Public Library’s Burton Historical Collection from 1924 to 1947 and was lecturer at both Wayne State University and the University of Detroit.
He was born in Nashua, Ia., and became interested in history at the age of 7.
Long hours of farm work and later the task of working his way through Grinnell College limited his research. He later attended the University of Missouri and the University of Chicago.
He entered the academic world as a professor at Chicago’s Lewis Institute.
He entered the historical world officially as superintendent of the Wisconsin Historical Society.
HE SHARES his history by writing more than 100 works, including 37 volumes of the Lakeside Classics, “I Remember Detroit,” “This is Detroit,” “River of Destiny,” and the Lakes Series.
Through his work Dr. Quaife became known as the greatest authority on the history of Michigan and the Northwest. Dr Quaife lived at 56 Louise, Highland Park. He is survived also by a son, Donald, and daughters Helen, Dorothy and Mary.
