Obituary of Marion Quaife

Marion Cagley Quaife, daughter of Charles F. and Pearl Cagley Quaife, was born at Newell, S. Dak., Dec. 29, 1912, and passed away Wednesday Mar. 24, 1937, at St. Joseph hospital in New Hampton, Ia.
When a baby, her parents came to Charles City and later to Ionia. She started to school in Des Moines in 1917 and graduated from North High in 1931.
She was a member of the church of Christ and at a very early age taught a Sunday School class.
In 1933 she entered the Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines as a student nurse. From this institution she graduated in May 1936 and finished Nov. 1936. She was on the nursing staff of this hospital until she became ill some weeks ago. Following recovery she was advised to come home to recuperate. She was to have been married here at the Little Brown Church on Mar. 6, to Wilbur Kirchner, of Des Moines. But, she was suddenly taken worse and hurried to the hospital in New Hampton, where she passed away. Her fatal illness was due to rheumatic fever, followed by terminal pneumonia.
The friends of Marion bear eloquent testimony to her beautiful character. She had selected as her life work a profession which taxes mind and body. But, in spite of obstacles she determined to finish the job and carried many a difficult situation. Her complete unselfishness and love for fellow man was manifest in the success she made as a nurse.
As a friend she was to be treasured, ever loyal, faithful, understanding and sympathetic. She shared alike her joys and sorrows with those who came within her helpful counsel.
Marion was a great lover of books; they were her hobby. She loved to have them about her; and she profited by their wise counsel. Her appreciation of life was one of her greatest attributes. She loved the good, the fine, the beautiful and so filled her life with them that she had no room for the sordid. She was a fine type of idealist. Her goal was set very high; she could not be satisfied with the mediocre, but labored unceasingly to make her ideals come true.
She was greatly devoted to her mother and her aunt and had a great appreciation of all that had been done for her. Indeed, to all who knew her she will ever by a fragrant memory. Her beautiful life will be one more unanswerable argument for the life that is to be.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p. m., at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, Rev. Wm. Kest officiating. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery. Pallbearers were Lyle Huffman, Leon Frederici, Arthur Smith, Stanley Edson, John Schroeder, Arnold Klinehart. Music was furnished by Ralph Watts and Mrs. Winton Waite, accompanied by Mrs. Florence Davis Smith.
Out-of-town relatives and friends who came to attend the funeral were: her brother, Chas D. Quaife, and her fiancé, Wilber W. Kirchner, both of Des Moines; Miss Fannie Quaife, Bloomington, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Perce Ward, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Olson and Miss Maggie Larson, Cedar Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Warren Bergh, Wayland, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Smith, Miss Ruby Cagley and J. L. Cagley, Waterloo; Mrs. Morrison, Conrad, Iowa, and the following nurses and friends from Des Moines; Misses Maxine Morrison, Helen Long, Brenda Peterson, Laura Annerson and Louise Henry; Arthur Miner, Mrs. Russell Smith, Mrs. Cecil Copps, Dr. Robertson, Mr. and Mrs. Don Buhran, Mr. and Mrs. John Holley, and Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Hulse and son Charles.
