Darvin John Hartman, 101, of Hinton, passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 4, 2023 at a Sioux City nursing facility. He had been living at home since August 2023.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8 at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Hinton with the Reverend Klaus Raab officiating. Burial will be at Floyd Valley Cemetery with a luncheon following.

Visitation will be at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, with family present 6-8 p.m., prayer service at 7 p.m.

Darvin was born on June 23, 1922, on the family farm in Hungerford Township to John and Helen (Kovarna) Hartman.

Dar, also known as D.J., attended Country School through 8th grade and graduated from Hinton High School in 1939. He attended Morningside College for several semesters prior to enlisting.

He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army in WW II. Activated in March 1943, he was assigned to the 367th Harbor Craft Company. He worked in the Port Commander’s office as a Staff Sergeant in Milne Bay, New Guinea for two years. Dar was honorably discharged in January 1946.

Dar met Lois Townley at the Tomba Ballroom in Sioux City. They were united in marriage on June 1, 1949, at Wesley Methodist Church in Leeds. The couple made their home in rural Hinton where they farmed for over 50 years. Dar had a passion for farming and was always looking for new and innovative ways to improve farming. They moved into town next to the golf course in 1997 where they enjoyed watching golfers from their home.

Dar was actively involved in many organizations. He was the Post Commander for the American Legion, Director for both the Hinton Farmers Co-op and the Plymouth County REC, a member of Casper Post #477 of Hinton as well as the Plymouth County Board of Review. He was one of the founders of Marrland Development where he resided as the President and Manager for 38 years. During his tenure the population of Hinton doubled in size. He was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 67 years.

Dar enjoyed his Thursday night golf league, playing cards at the American Legion in Le Mars and was an avid Hawkeye basketball fan. He and Lois traveled extensively to cheer on the team at many NCAA tournaments. They were also able to travel to Germany, Alaska and Hawaii.

Dar’s survivors are his wife, Lois; Son Monte (Deb) Hartman with their children, Nick (Christy) Hartman, Jennifer (Mike) Fritts, Michael (Tara) Hartman, Kelli (Gene) Van Wettering, Shannon (Barry) Clark; Son John (Julie) Hartman and their children, Dan (Jill) Hartman, Katie (Mike) Beckstrand, Rachel (Justin) Stonacek; Daughter Gena (Russ) Stroyek and their children, Megan (Ralph) Nadeau and Bryce Stroyek; 22 great grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Iona Kasch Trometer, infant sister Viola and daughter-in- law Dianne Hartman.

Memorial donations will be directed by the family to Trinity Lutheran Church and Floyd Valley Cemetery.
