Mick McConnell rites Tuesday

Edgar M. "Mick" McConnell, 66, Oakland, formerly of Fairfield, died at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 1988, at Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital in Omaha, Neb.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Burch-Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham with the Rev. Shirley Rozendaal officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery at Birmingham. Masonic rites, and military rites by VFW Post 9127 of Des Moines will be conducted. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to the Iowa Heart Association.

McConnell was born Sept. 2, 1921, in Oakland, the son of John D. and Elinor Gillespie McConnell. He grew up in Oakland, attended Carson and Oakland schools and graduated from Parsons College in Fairfield. A member of the Iowa National Guard, 34th Red Bull Division, he fought in the European Front during World War II. He was a traffic manager for Doughboy Industries, Fairfield, taught chemist in Fort Dodge, worked for VFW and retired from the Veterans Administration in 1975.

A life member of VFW Post 9127, he had served as VFW state commander and state quartermaster adjutant. He was a member of Arch Lodge AF and AM 335 at Oakland, a 32nd degree Mason, member of Scottish Rites SJ in Des Moines, Loyal Order of Moose 709 in Phoenix and life member of BPOE 1192 in Fairfield. He married Hollis Dean Rodgers Nov. 9, 1940, at Princeton, Mo. They lived in Phoenix for 21 years until returning to Oakland in October, 1987.

Surviving are his wife; a son, Michael of Orange Park, Fla.; three grandchildren; two sisters, Parthena Carley of Oakland, Mable Peterson of Mesa, Ariz.; three nieces and nephews. His parents, a sister and a granddaughter preceded him in death.
