OBITUARY

Dorothy Martin

Dorothy Ruth Martin was born at Story City, Iowa on Sept. 12, 1921, and died on July 22, 1927, aged five years, ten months and ten days.

Dorothy was a bright child and at the age of about a year and a half accidentally fell from her baby-carriage and seriously injured her head. Apparently this fall resulted in the loss of her hearing and speech.

Her loving parents did all in their power to restore her loss, sending her to the hospital at Iowa City, by consulting a number of specialists, and physicians which seemed of little avail.

Last October she was placed in the Iowa School for the Deaf, at Council Bluffs, Iowa; where she soon became a star pupil according to a letter received from one of her instructors.

Dorothy came home for her summer vacation in May, and since which time she has been able to speak quite a number of words, to understand much that was spoken to her by observing the lips of the one speaking to her, and was able to read and write quite well and seemed real happy in acquiring this art and means of conversation.

On the evening of July 22 Dorothy strolled out on the street and was struck by a passing automobile, and her life passed out in a few moments.

She leaves to mourn her sad and early departure, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Martin, and one sister, DeVera Fay Martin, many other relatives and sorrowing friends.

Her sudden and unexpected departure came as a great shock to her parents and loved ones and to the whole community, and she will be greatly missed, but she has passed on to a brighter and happier realm where there are no handicaps, and all is perfect in the presence of her God of love.

The funeral services were held in Grace church, Monday, July 25th, 1927, at 2 P. M., conducted by Rev. L. L. Orth, who preached a comforting and helpful sermon. Interment was made in the Story City cemetery.
