Thank you for the additional information. You didn't list resources you have checked so I hope the information that follows is not a duplicate:
In Iowa, official registration of births, deaths, and marriages began July 1, 1880 (after the date James Boon died). All original records that have been registered are on file with the Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics. Statewide record searches are available from the state registrar. Having said that, you may want to join the Jones County, IA Ancestors Facebook page to ask if anyone has access to church records that are not online that may help in your search. It would be helpful if you have information on the church he belonged to (name and location). It's a private group and the link to request to join is: https://www.facebook.com/groups/418573734937649
Another resource would be the online newspapers which are free and here is am example of a page that I found listing a death remembrance for James Boon:
