Kraus, John 1868 - 1942

KRAUS, SUNDERMAN, FENSTERMANN, SCHWICHTENBERG

Funeral services for John Kraus were held at the Wood Methodist church, Thursday afternoon, with Rev. Smith in charge. Burial was made in the Ebenezer cemetery. Pallbearers were Ernest Moser, Otto Berens, Oscar Friedley, Walter Fritz, Emory Ash and John Hamlett.

John Kraus, son of Henry and Elizabeth Kraus, was born January 10th, 1868, at Communia in Volga township, this county. He grew to manhood in the community in which he was born. On February 02, 1898, he was united in marriage to Anna Sunderman of Colony township, Colesburg, and he and his bride made their home in Communia.

Three children were born to them. The first child, a son, died at birth; the other two are Harley Kraus, who resides on the farm one mile and a half east of Wood, and Lenora, now Mrs. Howard Fenstermann, who with her husband, operate the Wood store.

In the spring of 1907 the Kraus family moved from Communia to the farm east of Wood Center on which their son Harley and his wife now reside. In 1928 John and his wife left the farm and moved into the home in Wood Center, where Mr. Kraus died, Tuesday afternoon, June 02, 1942, at the age of 74 ears.

The deceased was always a public spirited citizen and served Elk township as trustee. He united with the Methodist church in 1890 and was a valued member of the same.

Surviving him are his wife, their son Harley and daughter, Mrs. Howard Fenstermann; one sister, Mrs. Emma Schwichtenberg of Goodell, Iowa, and three brothers, Henry Kraus of Communia, Will Kraus of Garner and Jake Kraus of Volga City. One brother and two sisters preceded him in death.
