Clayton County Register, 06 May 1942.

Funeral services were held April 21 in Zion Lutheran church with the Rev. D. A. Flesner officiating. Burial was made in the Clayton Center cemetery.

Mrs. Emelia Wilhelmine Gruning Funk was born in Pommern, Germany, on August 04, 1862. Growing to young womenhood in Germany she was united in marriage to Carl Funk on April 10, 1882. In the same year the young couple migrated to America settling at Clayton Center. To this union were born eleven children, four of whom preceded the parents in death. Mr. Funk died on September 01, 1940, at the age of 84 years.

After arriving in Iowa Mr. and Mrs. Funk spent their remaining years in Clayton Center. Mrs. Funk was a member of the Ladies' Aid of Zion Lutheran church.

Although suffering an affliction for many years Mrs. Funk was able to be up and around the house until March 13 of this year when she became bed-ridden. The pain caused by a tumor increased, the final weeks being filled with much suffering. She was relieved from this suffering on Sunday morning, April 19, at 4:15 o'clock, after having reached the age of 79 years, 8 months and 15 days.

Left to mourn her death are seven children: Ben Funk, St. Olaf; Mrs. Emelia Gerdes, St. Olaf; August Funk, Elkader, Mrs. Lena Gossman, Elkader; Mrs. Minnie Hamilton, Dubuque; Mrs. Frieda Doeppke, Elkader and Mrs. Pauline Leib, Elkader. Two sisters: Miss Caroline Gruning, Buffalo, N.Y., and Mrs. Mary Brudo, Lake View, N.Y. Also 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, four children preceded her in death: Albert, Charles, Willie, and an infant son that died at birth.
