Howard Klatt Dies After Brief Illness

Howard J. Klatt, 68, well-known Cherokee businessman, died early Thursday morning in the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Osakis, Minn., Klatt moved to Cherokee in 1929 as manager of the Gambles Store. In November, 1949, he purchased the Nicholson Hardwar Store which he operated until 1966 as Klatt’s Hardware Store. He then sold the business to Kenneth Lee, but remained active in the present store.

He is survived by his widow, Evelyn; two sons, Howard J. Klatt, Jr. of Oelwein and Robert K. Klatt of Wausau, Wis., two daughters-in-law, Darlene and Lois; three sisters, Mrs. A. J. Osten Sacken of St. Cloud, Minn.; Mrs. R. E. Stewart of Anoka, Minn.; and Mrs. W. L. Myers of Tampa, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Klatt was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church and had served as an elder in the church. He was a past president of the Rotary Club and a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Osakis Lodge No. 180 A.F. & A. M. at Osakis, Minn.

(Note: Howard’s funeral was held February 26 at Memorial Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.)
