HARLAN. Population 2,500. The judicial seat of Shelby county, is an incorporated town located on the West Nishnabotna river, and on the C. R. I. & P. the C. G. W. and C. & N. W. Rys., 14 miles n. of Avoca, 35 s. of Carroll, 45 n. e. of Council Bluffs, and 100 w. of Des Moines. It is lighted by electricity, has water works, fire department, telephone facilities, 3 hotels, an opera house, a $65,000 court house, a number of prosperous manufacturing establishments, 3 banks and 4 weekly newspapers, the American, Shelby County Republican, the Tribune and the Vaegteren (Danish-Norwegian).
