Weehler is state rodeo champion

A recent Mount Ayr graduate is headed back to Wyoming to compete in the National Rodeo Finals.

Riley Weehler won the state championship in two events at the state rodeo finals held last week.

Weehler placed first in the tie down calf roping competition and partnered with Payden Dawson from Maryville, MO to capture the team roping crown.

The top four finishers in each event qualify for the 67th National Finals Rodeo to be held July 12-18 in Rock Springs, WY.

This national event will feature more than 1500 contestants from 42 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia. This is the largest rodeo in the world.

Weehler plans to rodeo at the collegiate level next year as a part of the team at McCrook Community College in Nebraska.

Another recent MAC grad, Ashton Johnson also competed at the state finals. She finished fifth in the goat tying and sixth in the break-away roping. This fall Johnson will attend Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, OK as a member of their rodeo team.
