RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, July 31, 1980

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Mount Ayr will be losing a major retailer Saturday when the C.R. Anthony store on the east side of the square closes its doors for good. Announcement of the closing was made Monday when store manager Tom MORRIS was officially notified that, after his transfer to a new store in Arkansas, the store here would be closed. MORRIS said the company is closing three of its smaller stores across the country this week. Company headquarters for the chain is in Oklahoma City, OK. The Mount Ayr store was one of the smaller Anthony's stores. The company has found that stores in larger towns are more profitable, MORRIS notes.

Everyone will be sorry to see it go, especially MORRIS and the three full-time employees who work there: Lorene COMBS, Pat WHITE and Nola SWIETLIK.

"I am sorry to see the store close here and personally appreciated the support the store has had in Mount Ayr," said MORRIS.

Three persons were injured in two one-vehicle accidents in Ringgold county this week, the Ringgold County Sheriff's office reported. Donald GROSE of Ellston and Scott WOOD of Kellerton were injured in an accident at 12:45 a.m. Saturday morning one and one-helf miles east of Mount Ayr on Highway 2 near Poe Hollow Park.

According to the Ringgold County Sheriff's report, GROSE was driving a 1970 Pontiac owned by Duane E. GROSE east on the highway when a wheel dropped over the edge of the pavement. When pulling back on the highway GROSE lost control because of mud on the wheels and went into the ditch. Damage was estimated at $600 and no charges were filed.

Stanley Willis McDANIEL of Diagonal was injured in an accident five miles northwest of Diagonal on a country road south of the Ray CARSON residence at 11:30 a.m. July 23. McDANIEL was driving a 1979 Ford pickup owned by SCHLAPIA, Inc. going south on the gravel road when he lost control, went into the ditch on the east side of the road, through a fence, and overturning, landing on its top. Damage to the pickup was listed at $5,500 and damage to the fence on the CARSON farm was estimated at $150.
