RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, January 29, 1987

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Ed and Kathy SHIELDS of rural Mount Ayr design and construct wedding gowns. Making the unique creations is a hobby, not a vocation for them. Ed SHIELDS is the manager of the Graceland College Bookstore at Lamoni. In making the gowns the SHIELDES divide responsibility. Often times Kathy does the machine work and Ed, the designing and handwork.

"The Dancing Donkey," amusical play for children from the Netherlands, came to life on the stage in the Mount Ayr Community elementary school gymnasium last week when the Children's Theatre Troupe from Graceland College gave a performance for many of the elementary school grades. The play was produced as part of a winter term course at the college and toured to many schools in the surrounding area.

The Ringgold County Ministerial Association has received unexpected responses to two of its programs. One was a big "thank you" from South Carolinians for hay sent their way when the need was great last year. Ringgold county was part of a group who sent hay to the Carolinas when drought there kept their hay crop from being adequate to feed their cattle. At the January 15 RCMA meeting it was announced that a gift of canned goods and large amounts of clothing had been received here to help this area in its need. It was a thank you from people in South Carolina. Another program of the Ringgold County Ministerial Association is the administration of grant money from "Project HARVEST" (Harvesting Available Resources For a Viable and Environmentally Sound Tomorrow). A $5,000 community development grant was received by the RCMA in November from the Human Needs Commission Episcopal Diocese of Iowa. At the January 15 RCMA meeting it was announced that $144 of this had been used. Part of it went to send Rev. Phil KINTON and David WAGNER of Mount Ayr to an ADAPT program held in Des Moines. Another part went for scholarships to last weekend's Midwest Rural Women's Conference in Des Moines. Recipients were Coletta WEEDA and Connie RICHARDS of Tingley, Jan LOOMIS of Kellerton and Judy HENSLEY of Mount Ayr. Almost as quickly as this amount went out, $105 of it came back in. Francine LOZEAU of New Hampshire had sent a donation to the Ringgold County Ministerial Association to be used in this project.

A $1,000 a year raise to all returning Clearfield school teachers and the increase of $800 in base pay, bringing it to a $13,100 level, were approved by the Clearfield school board at a special meeting held Thursday, Jan. 15, at the Clearfield school.

Two Grand Valley Community high school students will be attending the University of Iowa honors choir to be held in Iowa City Sunday and Monday, Feb. 1-2. Jenni BOLES and Dawn Marya HEWLETT will be representing Grand Valley Community high school and are directed by Katie Sue LOCKWOOD.
