RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, October 28, 1999

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Dr. Duane MITCHELL of Mount Ayr has spent some time over the last year putting together a short story about his experience in World War II as navigator and prisoner of war. Daughter Cherri BAILEY and son Steve MITCHELL inspired MITCHELL to record what he remembers so the family will have an accurate record for years to come. MITCHELL told his story on a cassette tape and daughter Cherrie compiled the information and wrote from the dictation.

A Mount Ayr couple is receiving rabies vaccine after bats found in their bedroom were found to be carrying rabies. Steve and Vicki LOOMIS killed the bats that were flying around the house. The bats were tested at Iowa State University and found to have rabies. The LOOMISES did not know of any direct contact with the bats but because the rabies disease can be emitted in the aersol mist as bats breathe and the LOOMISES had been sleeping in the room where they flew around, the vaccinations were taken as a precaution.

One of the new $10,000 grants for playground equipment brought a grouping to the Tingley city park and many people from the community helped install the equipment along with Rick HAWKINS, Ringgold county conservation board officer. Helping in some way with the project were John STERLING, Wes ALLEN, James MILLER, Cecil ALLEN, Rob STACKHOUSE, Cody STACKHOUSE, Rob STACKHOUSE, charlie CASE, Lawrence BISHOP, Betty LONG, Turk ALLEN, Patty STERLING, Cathy MASON, Nancy JARRED, Suzanne MILLER, Crystal STERLING, Jeff STERLING, Lois ENGLAND, John ALLEN, Chip LONG, John OVERHOLTZER, Gary PETERSON, Alan IBBOTSON, ELbert SKARDA, Bob SHAY, Tim STEWART and Sherry BRINER.

An actress with Ringgold county ties is starring in a new movie, "Boys Don't Cry." Hillary (sic, should be Hilary) SWANK, who has several relatives in Ringgold county, has starred in such movies as "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and "The Next Karate Kid" and has worked on the TV series "Beverly Hills 90210."

Another example of southern Iowa neighborliness took place Monday, oct. 11, when area farmers gathered at the farm of Lyle and Vicky LEONARD east of Clearfield to harvest their soybeans. Lyle LEONARD'S body was found along Highway 2 west of Mount Ayr this summer after he disappeared a month earlier.
