RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, February 28, 1985

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr Record-News

The state commander of the American Legion of Iowa, Vincent E. BLANK of Vinton, will speak to Mount Ayr Legionaires and Auxiliary members. The occasion is a 66th birthday anniversary party to be held Friday, March 1, at the Mount Ayr American Legion hall.

Maurice CARR, a well-known and respected Ringgold county schoolman, coach and athelete, died of a heart ailment in a Phoenix, AZ hospital last Friday, Feb. 22 [1985].

Five Mount Ayr Community Raider wrestlers will participate in the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines with the first round action at Veteran's Auditorium. Participating for the Raiders will be 98-pound Jeff SCOTT, 138-pound Matt DAUGHTON, 145-pound Joe WARIN, 155-pound Brian WIMER and 185-pound Rowdy McDOWELL.

Advancing five wrestlers to the state tournament has only been done twice before by a Mount Ayr Community wrestling team.

The last of the Ringgold county girls basketball teams in the regional tournaments ended its season Tuesday night when Diagonal-Clearfield Maroonettes played Orient-Macksburg and were handed a 77-54 loss, only its second loss of the season.

Gerald and Brenda BABCOCK, owners of the Western Auto store in Mount Ayr, had a chance to speak for national television cameras when an NBC televison news crew visited Mount Ayr Tuesday. The crew interviewed a number of area residents and taped scenes from around the community. The cameras then followed Ringgold county farmers and business people who traveled to the National Crisis Action Rally at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames Wednesday. The rally was expected to attract a huge crowd to Ames to help get a message to the rest of the country of the seriousness of the farm crisis in Iowa and throughout the farm belt.
