A Tingley landmark came down recently when the school building, built in 1918, was demolished. This is the first year since 1882 that there have been no classes in Tingley. The building was used until this year when the new elementary school was completed in Mount Ayr that houses all elementary classrooms for the school district. The area will be leveled when the rest of the rubble is trucked away.

A member of the Tingley American Legion post has received a diamond jubilee certificate from the organization for 61 years of continuous membership. He is John BOYD of North Fort Myers, FL., who was a charter member of the Tingley post and has maintained his membership continuously.

The largest turnip brought into the Record-News office this fall (and the only one for that matter), was a whopper from the garden of Roy DAVENPORT. The four and one-half pound turnip measured 20 inches in circumference and was one of the gems of an otherwise not too good gardening season, DAVENPORT said.

Jeff FRENCH of Mount Ayr discovered an oddity of the wild along the river six miles northeast of Mount Ayr recently. The remains of two large bucks were found with their horns locked together. From the scene it looked like one of the bucks broke its neck in the battle and the other died because it could not break loose. FRENCH took pictures of the deer Sunday.

Mildred ELLIOTT of Mount Ayr was recognized "citizen of Iowa" by Iowa State University extension workers for outstanding service to the people in her community and state.

Marilyn J. WERNER was honored for distinguised service to the 4-H and youth program during a national meeting held Nov. 4 in Detroit, MI. She was one of 81 extension workers from the United States to receive a Distinguished Service Award.
