Lee DAVENPORT of Diagonal, prominent Lincoln township farmer, was elected president of the Ringgold county Farm Bureau at the annual meeting held Tuesday night at the Mount Ayr Country Club. Mr. DAVENPORT succeeds Charles BASTOW of Mount Ayr, who presided over the meeting, which was attended by 140 members. Lloyd ANGUS of Mount Ayr was elected vice president and Duane TRIGGS and L. H. GRAY, both of Mount Ayr, were re-elected secretary and treasurer, respectively.

The Mount Ayr Raiders won their sixth victory in conference competition and moved to within two games of capturing the Blue-grass Conference title as they downed a Leon Cardinal eleven, 20-6, Friday night on the local field. The half-time score was 0-0.

At the regular meeting of the town council held last Wednesday night of last week, L. W. (Joe) GROSS was appointed a member of the council to fill the vacancy caused by the death of M. A. RUBEK. The oath of office was administered the same night by mayor J. M. TURNER. Mr. GROSS, who formerly served this territory as a highway patrolman, is a representative of Investors Mutual, Inc. He is also active in church, school and civic affairs.

Results of the soil judging contest, sponsored by the Ringgold Soils District, were recently announced by Ralph LONG, chairman of the district's commissioners. This contest, open to the agriculture students of the three high schools in the county, was held October 7 on the Alex MOFFATT farm. The schools placed as follows: Mount Ayr Community, first; Diagonal Community, second, and Grand Valley Community, third. Prizes awarded were $10.00, $7.50 and $5.00, respectively.

Two men are candidates fo rmayor and seven men seek five places as members of Mount Ayr's town council at the regular biennial election to be held November 7. Candidates for mayor are James M. TURNER, incumbent, and J. L. SCARDEIN, a retired farmer. Candidates for the council are the five incumbents -- Harold DAVIS, L. W. (Joe) GROSS, Charles HARVEY, C. E. HOLLOPETER and James MAHAN -- Doyle H. SCOTT and Verne M. TAGGART.

Editorial and business staff members for the 1962 "Hawkeye" yearbook at the State University of Iowa, Iowa City, have been announced by the editor-in-chief and business manager. Thomas MOSIER, junior in the College of Liberal Arts, was named to the position of chief photographer. A graduate of the Mount Ayr Community high school with the class of 1959, Thomas is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene MOSIER of Mount Ayr.

Recognized as one of the "top-notch" insurance agents in Iowa, Leo (Jocko) HACKER is also gaining a reputation as a cultivator of citrus fruit. For several months, passersby have been interested in a lemon tree on display in the front window of Mr. HACKER'S insurance office on North Fillmore Street. Of special interest was the large lemon on the tree, which has been maturing since January of this year and which, upon "becoming of age," separated itself from the mother tree. Five years ago, Mr. HACKER purchased the tree, which was only a few inches high, and since that time it has borne one lemon a year. Presently by the tree is bearing two more lemons.
