RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, May 26, 1988

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr Record-News

For the first time ever the Mount Ayr Community Raiderettes are state track champions. Several Raiderettes had made it to the state meet in the past, but there had never been a state individual champion before, and the Raiderettes had never seriously challenged for the state title. With a young team led by two key seniors, the Mount Ayr Community Raiderettes went undefeated in track meets all season long, then pulled an upset by bringing home the state track title Saturday. Going to the state were Jenny SHIELDS, coach Mark LARSEN, Jill TAYLOR, Jamie JONES, Jody SHIELDS, Traci LARSON, coach Dave STILL, Nikky CROSS, Laurel MOE, Kim McGINNIS, Dawn HUFF and Ann FOLTZ.

The parade of top students in Ringgold county high schools this year is all female. The valedictorian and salutatorian for the three Ringgold county high schools were named at graduation ceremonies or honors assemblies this week. The top students included Mount Ayr Community high school valedictorian Emily McALEXANDER and salutatorian Leslie BARKER; Grand Valley Community high school valedictorian Racinda JACKSON and salutatorian Jennifer HULLINGER and Diagonal Community high school valedictorian Jari Jo LARSEN and Angie McDONALD.

Two Mount Ayr Community art students recently placed third in a creative project contest sponsored by Dremel power tools. Each received $50 for their placing in the national contest. Ron SCHAFER entered the contest with his Blue Bill carved duck decoy and Richie LONNETTI entered the contest with his Hooded Muganser carved duck decoy. In addition to the awards to the students, the school received a Moto-Tool carving tool from the company. John NEWTON teaches the art classes at the high school in which the projects were made.

The Ringgold County Unit of the American Heart Association sponsored a "Celebrity Waiter Dinner" for the benefit of the American Heart Association at the American Legion Building in Mount Ayr on Saturday, May 14. The event, co-ordinated by Rosemary SCHLAPIA, was a huge success and raised over $1,000, which will be donated to the American Heart Association. There were 68 meals served.

Mount Ayr Community high school will be represented by nine boys at the state Class 2A track meet in Des Moines Friday, May 27, and Saturday, May 28. Boys who will participate in the meet at Drake Stadium include Scott WALTERS, Ed McCREARY, Randy WEEHLER, Shawn O'MAILIA, Eric MOE, Scott SMITH, Bob TAYLOR, Dan DREDGE and Aaron GROVES. Coach Brad RUMPLE will be accompanying the group.

Mount Ayr Community Raiderette golf squad ended the season at the regional golf tournament in Pleasantville Tuesday. The girls placed fourth in the six-team field participating on the Pleasantville home course. To advance the Raiderettes would have had to be the winning team or have the top individual. The sectional championship team included Jody CROSS, Andrea MEKUS, Angie ELLIOTT, Brenda BICKELAND and Monica CANNON.
