RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, February 26, 1981

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

There was about $200 damage done to a 1969 International 1600 truck loaded with cattle when fire broke out around the emergency brake. This happened to a truck owned by Gene KUHNS of rural Greenfield about 6:50 p.m. March 21 six miles north of Mount Ayr on Highway 169. KUHNS was reported by firemen to be traveling behind his wife who was driving the truck. He noticed sparks coming out of the truck and stopped Mr. KUHNS and called for help. The loss was confined to the area around the brake and to floor mats by Mount Ayr volunteer firemen.

Five employees of local utility companies were called to Bloomfield and Grinnell Monday to assist with repair of lines and poles broken by heavy snow and ice and felled by high winds. Storms Sunday played havoc with power lines and Monday noon Hap RICHARDS, Lee BRAND and Max SMITH, Rideta Electric Cooperative linemen, answered a call for help from Southern Iowa Electric Cooperative at Bloomfield. The area reported ice and around five inches of heavy snow which incased the lines and made they heavy. When high winds blew, the lines snapped and poles fell. Two employees of Iowa Southern Utilities, Robert HALEY, lineman, and Raymond HENSLEY, district serviceman, and an Iowa Southern truck were sent to Grinnell Monday morning to assist with reparing destruction by an ice storm there.

Merle TRIGGS became the first student in Mount Ayr Community high school history to qualify for the state wrestling meet three years in a row when he won the 132-pound class at the district meet at Norwalk Saturday.
